We hope this site will be of assistance to you in finding reputable breeders of more than 60 AKC-registered breeds. In this age of the puppy-mill industry, it is most important that potential dog owners be put in contact with ethical, non-commercial breeders, those who breed for love and not for profit. Breeders listed here can advise potential buyers on what to expect from the particular breed they are considering. Those who purchase a puppy will always have a ready source of information and guidance as their pet matures. Best of all, they will be assured of buying a healthy, well-socialized puppy that has been raised in a loving home.

USDA Proposed Regulations

The proposed regulations of the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) have the potential to affect the way hobby breeders sell puppies. These new regulations change the exemption of "retail pet stores," which is how most hobby breeders are now exempt from USDA regulation. Under the proposed regulation change, retail pet stores (defined as anyone selling puppies directly to a final customer for use as pets) would be exempt from USDA regulation only if the customer actually enters the premises of the breeder prior to the buying the pet. This requirement would preclude selling puppies to anyone outside your local geographical region unless the buyer goes to your home to physically observe the puppy and the premises.
Being subject to USDA regulation means far more than being subject to USDA inspections. Breeders would have to adhere to USDA animal housing requirements (size of kennel facility, etc.) and could not maintain the animals in a home environment. Although the proposed rules increase to four the number of breeding females that can be maintained before the breeder is subject to USDA regulation, the definition of "breeding females" is vague. Some have raised the question as to whether co-owned bitches might count toward the four animals. Also, whether one intends to breed a bitch or not, if she is not spayed -- no matter what her age -- she probably counts toward the definition of "breeding female."

For more information on the proposed regulations and their possible effect on hobby breeders, go to the AKC link below. (There is a link on the side of the cited page for signing the petition).
